Overview

Students will write a paper synthesizing the history, populations, and challenges of jails in the United States. They will use assigned readings, statistical data, and current reports to evaluate the role of jails and the impact of operational challenges on their effectiveness.

  • LO2: Evaluate the contemporary challenges facing jails and their impact on correctional effectiveness. (SLO6)
Assignment Topic
  • Using the assigned readings, statistical tables, and current reports, analyze the history, populations, and challenges of U.S. jails.
  • Discuss how jails have evolved, who they hold today, and what problems they face with overcrowding, staff shortages, and jail standards.
  • Evaluate how these challenges shape the overall effectiveness of jails in the correctional system.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • Ask AI to draft an outline combining jail history, population data, and challenges.
  • Use AI to summarize key findings on overcrowding and personnel shortages from the readings.

  • A minimum of at least two (2) sources, with proper APA citations in a Reference Page and proper in-text citations.
  • Abstract NOT needed.
