Overview

Students will write a short paper analyzing the historical progression of correctional practices, moving from ancient codes and punishments to Enlightenment-inspired reforms. The assignment encourages students to identify continuities and changes in philosophies of punishment and correction.

  • LO1: Describe how early legal codes and institutions shaped correctional practices. (SLO1)
  • LO2: Analyze the impact of Enlightenment philosophies on the evolution of corrections. (SLO6)
Assignment Topic
  • Trace the evolution of correctional thought from Hammurabi’s Code through the Enlightenment era.
  • Discuss at least two ancient codes or institutions and evaluate how Enlightenment philosophies began to transform correctional approaches.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • Prompt AI to compare Hammurabi’s Code and Enlightenment ideas of punishment.
  • Use AI to generate outlines connecting historical codes to modern correctional debates.

  • A minimum of at least two (2) sources, with proper APA citations in a Reference Page and proper in-text citations.
  • Abstract NOT needed.
