Overview

This activity is designed to help you understand the differences between criminal law and municipal ordinances and how local laws affect everyday life in a community. You will examine why municipal ordinances can be confusing for residents and explore how these local regulations are created and enforced. By locating and analyzing a specific ordinance in your town, you will evaluate its clarity, purpose, and impact on the community. You will also consider whether municipal ordinances provide meaningful benefits or whether communities should rely solely on state law. The goal is to strengthen your understanding of local governance, legal authority, and the practical implications of law at the community level.

Prep Topic

After completing this week’s assigned readings, prepare to participate in an in-class discussion examining the purpose and impact of municipal ordinances.

Before coming to class, locate one municipal ordinance from your hometown or another community of your choice and prepare a bulleted list (not full paragraphs) that includes:

  • The difference between criminal laws and municipal ordinances.
  • A brief summary of the ordinance you selected.
  • Why the ordinance may be confusing or misunderstood by community members.
  • The purpose of the ordinance and the problem it is intended to address.
  • At least three arguments supporting the use of municipal ordinances to address local issues.
  • At least three arguments supporting the position that municipalities should rely primarily on state laws instead of local ordinances.
  • Which position you currently find more persuasive, and why.
  • One question or observation you would like to discuss with your classmates.

  • Do not overthink this activity. A simple list of well-developed talking points is sufficient.

  • Review the grading rubric before submitting your work.
  • Submissions are checked using both a plagiarism checker and AI detection software.
  • Direct quotations should not exceed 15% of the total submission.
