Overview

This activity is designed to help you understand the structural and legal differences between sheriff’s departments and police departments in the United States. You will examine how these agencies operate across different regions of the country and compare their roles, responsibilities, and jurisdictions. In addition, you will analyze where each agency derives its authority by identifying the legal or constitutional language that supports their existence. The goal is to strengthen your understanding of law enforcement organization, governance, and the sources of police power.

  • LO2: Define the roles and responsibilities of local (county and municipal) law enforcement agencies. State police agencies, and federal law enforcement agencies. (SLO3)
Assignment Topic
  • What are the differences between a Sheriff’s department and a police department? In your response consider the role of these agencies across the country, not limited to the Northeast.
  • Where do these agencies gain their powers? Be sure to specifically identify language that supports the existence of these agencies.
