Module Overview
This module focuses on understanding the structure, authority, and future direction of law enforcement in the United States. You will examine the organizational and legal differences between police departments and sheriff’s offices, including how these agencies derive their powers and operate across different regions of the country. The module also explores contemporary challenges facing policing, with particular attention to leadership, accountability, and public trust. By analyzing recent police reform efforts in Massachusetts, you will evaluate how policy changes may shape law enforcement practices in the coming decade. You will be encouraged to assess both the practical and ethical implications of these reforms. Together, these activities connect law enforcement structure, legal authority, and policy reform within the broader context of modern policing.
