Overview

This activity is designed to help you apply Social Disorganization Theory to real-world communities by examining the concept of a disorganized urban area. You will begin by defining what constitutes a disorganized urban area and explaining how this concept is connected to social disorganization theory. Using a location of your choice, you will document observable environmental and social conditions through photographs and analyze factors that may contribute to higher crime rates. You will then propose practical strategies that could help reduce crime in the community. The goal is to connect criminological theory, environmental observation, and problem-solving within a realistic community context.

Assignment Topic
  • Define what is meant by a Disorganized Urban Area. How is the concept of Disorganized Urban Area connected to Social Disorganization Theory?
  • Create a PowerPoint Presentation that includes:
  • Locate a Disorganized Urban Area and take a few pictures of this location.
  • Using the pictures that you have taken build a PowerPoint Presentation that identifies the factors that you believe are present to serve as a high crime rate.
  • Identify measures that could be used to reduce crime in this community.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • Use AI to help you clarify the key elements of Social Disorganization Theory and how they relate to the concept of a disorganized urban area, supporting your understanding before creating your presentation.
  • Use AI to assist you in organizing your observations and identifying possible community-level strategies for crime reduction based on the factors you observed, helping you structure your PowerPoint before finalizing it.
