Overview

This activity is designed to help you compare major schools of criminological thought and evaluate how different theories explain criminal behavior. Based on the first letter of your last name, you will be assigned to a group representing a specific theoretical school and select at least three theories from that school. You will analyze why those theories best explain why individuals commit crime and prepare to defend your position. Working within your group, you will engage in a comparative discussion with other groups to assess the strengths and limitations of each theoretical perspective. The goal is to strengthen your understanding of criminological theory through analysis, collaboration, and reasoned argument.

  • LO1: Compare and contrast theoretical perspectives from the Chicago School of Criminology. (SLO5)
  • LO2: Discuss the relevance of both sociological and environmental factors that may encourage criminal behavior. (SLO6)

  • Review the below groups. The first letter of your Last name is the group your are in:
    • Group #1 (A – F): Sociological School
    • Group #2 (G – L):Psychological School 
    • Group #3 (M – R): Biological School
    • Group #4 (S – Z): Neo-classical & Classical School
  • Select at least 3 theories from your group the you feel best explains why a person may commit crime.
  • The class will be divided into their Groups for this exercise. Students will need to prove why their theories are better in explaining criminal behavior than the other groups.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • Use AI to help you review and organize key criminological theories within your assigned school so you can identify which three best explain criminal behavior before preparing your group contribution.
  • Use AI to assist you in comparing the strengths of the theories you selected with those from other criminological schools, helping you clarify how to defend your group’s position during the discussion.
Directions

Please read all instructions carefully before participating in the discussion.

  • Students must complete one Main Post that answers the discussion topic using more than 250 words.
  • Students must reply to at least two of their classmates (Peer Responses) using at least 150 words. Responses should encourage further dialogue in the discussion forum. Asking a classmate, a question is a nice way of furthering that dialogue.
  • Student must first compose an original Main Post to gain access to the discussion forum. Attempts to post a blank initial post or anything other than the true Main post will result in a 20-point deduction..
