Overview

This activity is designed to deepen your understanding of how crime is measured, reported, and predicted in the United States. You will examine limitations of the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) and compare reporting differences between the NCVS and the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR). The activity also introduces key concepts such as prevalence rates, crime forecasting, and the “dark figure of crime,” highlighting why official statistics may not fully capture criminal activity. Finally, you will explore how Bayesian Probability Theory can help address gaps in traditional crime data and improve understanding of crime trends.
