Northern Essex Community College
Module 12 Writing Assignment
Review the assignment overview, learning objectives, directions, and submission expectations before submitting your work.
Overview
This activity is designed to help you understand the factors that place youth at risk for delinquent behavior and why those factors matter. You will identify and examine key risk factors associated with juvenile delinquency, considering influences at the individual, family, school, peer, and community levels. The activity encourages you to analyze how these factors interact and contribute to delinquent behavior rather than viewing them in isolation. You will also connect risk factors to criminological or developmental theory and consider how prevention or intervention strategies might reduce their impact. The goal is to develop a deeper, more comprehensive understanding of juvenile delinquency and the importance of early, evidence-based responses.
Student Learning Objectives
(These objectives support the assignment and are not the questions to be answered.)
- LO3: Describe the findings of research studies examining the causes of juvenile offending. (SLO3)
- LO4: Describe strategies used to address juvenile violence and responses to the juvenile victim. (SLO4)
Assignment Topic

- Include factors at the individual, family, school, peer, and community levels
- Explain how each factor increases the risk of delinquent behavior
- Analyze why these factors contribute to delinquency:
- Discuss how exposure, opportunity, socialization, or lack of supervision may influence behavior
- Explain how multiple risk factors can interact or compound one another
- Connect risk factors to theory:
- Identify at least one criminological or developmental theory that helps explain juvenile delinquency
- Explain how the theory supports the relationship between risk factors and delinquent behavior
- Apply to prevention or intervention:
- Identify one or two strategies that could reduce the impact of these risk factors
- Explain how early intervention might change outcomes for at-risk youth
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
- Use AI to help you organize juvenile delinquency risk factors into categories (individual, family, school, peer, and community) so you can clearly explain how each contributes to delinquent behavior before writing your response.
- Use AI to assist you in thinking through how criminological or developmental theories explain the relationship between identified risk factors and juvenile delinquency, helping you structure your analysis before completing the assignment.
