This activity is designed to help you examine police misconduct through the lens of professional values, ethics, and organizational behavior. By analyzing a documented case of misconduct, you will explore how ethical standards and core police values guide—or fail to guide—officer behavior. The activity also introduces the concept of herd mentality and its potential influence on ethical decision-making within law enforcement agencies. Through application and analysis, you will evaluate how individual actions and group dynamics can impact accountability and public trust. Assignment Topic
Police misconduct raises important questions about ethics, professional values, and organizational culture within law enforcement. For this assignment, you will examine a documented case of police misconduct and analyze it through an ethical and behavioral lens.
In your response, address the following:
  1. Identify and summarize a case of police misconduct:
    • Briefly describe the incident, including what occurred and the outcome
    • Explain why the case is considered misconduct
  2. Explain core police values:
    • Identify common values expected of police officers (e.g., integrity, accountability, service)
    • Explain why these values are essential to public trust and effective policing
  3. Define police ethics:
    • Explain what is meant by police ethics
    • Describe how ethical standards guide officer decision-making and behavior
  4. Apply ethics and values to the case:
    • Identify which police values or ethical principles were upheld or violated in your selected case
    • Explain how ethical failures contributed to the misconduct
  5. Analyze “herd mentality”:
    • Define herd mentality
    • Discuss whether this behavior played a role—or could have played a role—in your selected case
    • Explain how herd mentality may impact police ethics and accountability more broadly
